HCR 138:

Another Attempt to Push Politically Charged Sex and Gender Related Indoctrination
Parents are under continual assault from leftist radicals through the state legislature in the education of their children. We must discuss ways to prevent the legislature from invading classrooms with instruction related to obviously politically-tainted sex and gender-related education.
As we saw in the efforts toward House Bill 1697, the legislature is trying to overtly change curriculum and books in the enforcement of “comprehensive training for teachers…(on)accurate representations of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning, intersexual, asexual, other sexual orientations and gender identities, persons of color, and disability communities…”
Now consider HCR 138 which was introduced on March 11, 2022. This measure would request the Department of Education to create “a student-led working group to address the need for active inclusion of diverse identities and beyond sexual health education, to teach culturally responsive ideas around mutual respect in relationships, and to find sites of potential active inclusion of these identities in sexual health curricula…”
Make no mistake, this is yet another attempt to move behind the scenes in schools to indoctrinate your children in woke politics surrounding transgender and other sexual-related issues under the innocuous term of “inclusion.”
These student-led working groups would undoubtedly be under the firm control of teachers or administrators to ensure they follow the most radical thinking on such issues, while simultaneously stamping out traditional approaches.
There is, of course, an answer to this kind of subversion: abandon the premise that schools are the correct place for such discussions. The school’s focus should fall back on Science, Math,English, Home Economics, Metal Shop, Physical Education, History, etc…There is plenty there.Leave discussions of politically-charged (and let’s be honest, one-sided) issues, to parents.
A properly-functioning education system should be free from overt or worse yet,behind-the-scenes attempts at using our schools to misguide students, block parental knowledge or input, or push a radical political agenda. Whether it is public, private, charter, or home schooling, the focus of schools is to prepare students for responsible citizenship, further education, and work.
Students need instruction that teaches how to think critically, not have their brains stuffed with ideology. As Hawaiʻi families are raising up the next generation, we know that our future leaders and more generally, our citizens, have problems to solve, new businesses to build and nurture, and unique and independent lives to grow and mature which will enhance our beautiful communities.
Our struggle against legislative or other efforts to block high-quality and meaningful education is something you can count on me to provide.
As governor, even if I am a lone voice on such sensitive and personal issues, through transparency, I will ensure our citizens are fully aware of politicians’ efforts to fool you and use gimmicky language in legislation to forward their misguided agenda.
We will win together.

ALOHA,
