Education in Hawaii:

Focus on What Makes Our State and Country Better by Building Knowledgeable Citizens
Education continues to be one of the most important parts of what feeds Hawaiʻi’s and the nation’s need for thinking leaders, workers and most importantly, good citizens.
Unfortunately, radical leftists years ago realized that to achieve their contentious goals meant taking over curriculum, teachers’ unions, and college faculties. An important element in this effort was to limit the choices of parents as to where to send their children for education and to keep as much public money as possible attached to their domain only — public schools. By concentrating on public school administrations and not the students, the leftist agenda could have its biggest impact.
Private schools, charter schools, and homeschooling have proven their worth many times over and all have a place alongside public schools. Good education is the goal, not developing indoctrination programs.
We must refocus school budgeting by ensuring public money follows the student. If parents want to send their children to schools outside the public school system, a portion of the cost should be available from taxes to help pay for that opportunity. This idea is not intended to enrich anyone. The portion of money to be used will be commensurate with the average per student expenditure for public schools.
Our mindset must change. Public schools have an important role and must improve. At the same time, we cannot allow dictatorial control to remain in the hands of a small number of administrators, guided by leftist ideology, to brainwash our children. During the COVID pandemic, parents were able to witness via Zoom lessons what their children were learning, and many were shocked by what they saw. Competition from private schools, charter schools and homeschooling will push public schools to improve while also breaking the left’s grip over what students learn. Competition breaks the monopoly.
Teaching divisive social theories or history that are aimed at indoctrinating children against theirown culture or country must end. Creating citizens that are highly literate, functional inmathematics and science, and have a grounded understanding of American and Hawaiianhistory are far more vital to the future of Hawaiʻi. Additionally, providing the opportunity forkeiki to gain industrial and practical skills in home economics, woodworking, or metal shop willset them up for further success.
We cannot simply return to not knowing, or worse yet, willfully ignoring the problem. We must act now to secure a bright and prosperous future for children in Hawaiʻi.
