Homelessness in Hawaiʻi Continues to Climb.

Homelessness in Hawaiʻi persists for a number of reasons, including the high prices of homes, and many of the so-called “fixes” which prove to be unsuccessful.

No one doubts this problem is of interest to people on the left and right, but it is clear that government-solutions are the sole crutch for Democrats.

In the latest point-in-time count (PIT Count), both Kauaʻi and the Big Island saw 5 percent gains in the number of homeless.

There is likely a role for the state government, but just as with other problems facing Hawaiʻi, the Democrats’ solution is pouring in more money to stem the growth.

Hawaiʻi County recently added to the property taxes on homes that are worth more than $2 million for use for affordable housing- yet another example of the government attempting to present a wedge between groups of its citizens. That’s a lazy so-called “solution.”

At least part of the long-term solution in addressing homelessness is to use the innovation of the private sector and non-profits.
Instead of knee-jerk calls for more government intervention, as governor I will call-in business and non-profit leaders from all the islands and help develop solutions that are right for each area. It will ultimately require resources, but we need focus and accountability.
Organizations outside of government are involved today, but I want bigger ideas that look to solutions that involve the entrepreneurs of Hawaiʻi instead of legislators flooding money to programs that are less proven and less accountable.
There is a role for government, but that should not be the first place to look. Anyone suggesting use of taxpayer dollars should prove that ideas involving private sector innovations are first examined and presented for consideration.
Affordable housing will address the problem to some extent, but to achieve this also requires the legislature to pull-down barriers for home builders and property renters to help lower costs of doing business.

The people of Hawaiʻi can work together to address homelessness. We need to think in bolder terms and get the government out of the way as much as possible.
